The Power of Women – A Blog Series…The ugly painting

ImageThe ugly painting – Why don’t women believe in themselves?

Over Mother’s Day weekend, my Mom and I attended a Mother’s Day Tea at our church. Although there was the expected treats and beverages of a lavish Mother’s Day Tea, there was not an inspirational speaker or Mother’s Day drama. Instead, there was an artist who led each person to paint flowers on their own canvas.

When the event opened, the lead artist asked the audience how many of us were artist. Out of my peripheral vision, I could see many hands shoot up. But when I looked around, all the hands were those of children under the age of ten. Not one adult (or teen for that matter) had her hand in the air.

What causes us to lose the ability to believe in ourselves?  What effects does it have on the rest of our lives? I believe the answer to both questions is the opinion of others.

Leading experts say that the #1 thing that hold people back from achieving their dreams and being successful is the fact that they do not believe in themselves. When a person does not believe in themselves, they are not able to handle the rejection one will face on the road to success.

Opinion matters.

Whose opinion do you believe? That is the question a woman must ask herself. Does that opinion reflect greatness or failure?

If we want our lives to reflect greatness, we must look into the mirror of The One who is great. That is God and only God. He is the one who knew us before the creation of the earth and destine us for the purpose that burns in our hearts (Ephesians 1:3-4). We are created in His image (Genesis 2), and it is only His reflection and opinion that we find freedom to soar.

In Psalm chapter 8, David struggles with these questions. He said, “I look at your macro-skies, dark and enormous, your handmade sky-jewelry, moon and stars mounted in their settings. Then I look at my micro-self and wonder, why do you both with me” Psalm 8:4-5 (MSG)? But David goes on to proclaim the truth of who God created us to be…only a little lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor (Psalm 8:6)!

Today, I want you to look into the face of God and when He calls out your gifts and talents I want you to jump up and raise you hand!

You can do it. I believe in you!

Yes Yes Yes! And, BTW, as I walked through that event during the hour of painting. I saw all of the women feel that sense that they too were an artist. I felt God’s love so much in that room. We didn’t need an inspirational speaker, but instead, a life activity to allow God in open up hearts. I’m so glad you were there!
