Saturday originated from the Roman god, Saturn, which is also the namesake for the planet Saturn.
The Roman god Saturn was known to control time.
You may have noticed, today is NOT Saturday. That is because time has a mysterious way of escaping and I did not get this blog written on Saturday. Instead, I was enjoying a fabulous retreat with friends at the ocean.
Interesting enough, Saturn, the Roman god of time was a part of much of our conversation even though no one ever mentioned his name. We spoke about seasons of life. We talked about having patience in times when our dreams seems delayed or in limbo. We spoke of the emotional energy and time investment it takes to raise healthy and confident children and having strong marriages. And we remarked on the lessons we learned as God created beginnings in seemingly tragic endings.
Time. How do you spend it?
I recently finished an excellent book titled: Chasing Daylight: How My Forthcoming Death Transformed My Life. Maybe the title sounds sad and depressing. In many ways, it was. But the lessons I received from reading the last words of the courageous author, Gene O’Kelly have helped me to change the way I think about and plan my time.
Think about how your life would change if you were told you only had a few months left to live?
What would you hold on too? What would you let go?
My Grandfather died at the age of 49. With regret in her voice, my Grandmother used to say, “If only I could hear him [my grandfather] snore one more time.”
The things that hold us back from accomplishing our dreams and living in peace with others may very well seem trite if we knew our life was at its end. Fear, past regrets, unforgiveness, bitterness, offense, are all feelings that we make a choice about on a daily basis. For example: Will you extend love or will you give someone the silent treatment because they didn’t act the way you wanted them too? Will you step out of your comfort zone in an effort towards our goals or will we stay locked in your small world of safety where you think nothing can go wrong?
James 4: 14 says, “Yet you do not know what your life will be like tomorrow. You are just a vapor that appears for a little while and then vanishes away.”
Time. How will you spend it today?
