The sabbath helps us know experientially that nothing we do will make God love us more.

The savings bank of human existence is the weekly Sabbath.
—William Garden Blaikie
The busyness of things obscures our concentration on God … Never let a hurried lifestyle disturb the relationship of abiding in Him. This is an easy thing to allow, but we must guard against it.
—Oswald Chambers
How do you view Sabbath?
Jesus said, “The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people, and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath.(Mark 2:27)
Sabbath is a place of rest and renewal. It is a delight in our busy lives.
It is a time to worship and reflect. A time to remember that we can trust God to provide for us.
It is a time to align ourselves with the truth of God’s words spoken about our lives; and a time to be encouraged in community.
Sabbath protects us from thinking the world depends on our existence.
It is a guardrail for the temptations of our lives.
In the book, “In the Name of Jesus”, Henri Nouwen says the three temptations of Christ were:
- To be useful
- To be important
- To be powerful
Sabbath reminds us that our worth does not come from what we do, what people think, or what we obtain. Our worth comes from God, who chose us as sons and daughters; heirs to His kingdom.
Take a few moments of Sabbath right now. Ask God to show you the parts of your heart that are susceptible to these temptations. Breath in the understanding that you are not alone in your human desires to be useful, important and powerful.
Listen.
What do you hear God whispering to your heart?
What do you think?
